I feel like a challenge
Considering going supermarket free next year. I think this will force us to get the most out of our allotment and plan better.
At the moment we use the supermarket for dry goods like flour, pasta, sugar and rice. We can order all these in instead. The biggest problem I think will be milk. I stopped drinking cows milk a few years ago and now mostly just use goats milk. I’ve found plenty of places to buy goats cheese but not milk yet!
I’ll also miss things like the odd tin of Heinz beans but if we can find a little mom and pop store to buy these from then i’ll be happy with that.
I believe that supermarkets can have such a hold over us when there is little else to choose from but i’m committed to changing what we can. I wont beat myself up over it though if I end up having to do a supermarket shop because we ran out of time to get to the market etc.
I’m worried that our town is probably getting two new large supermarkets over the next couple of years that will put 4 supermarkets all within about 3 miles. I think that this sounds like to many to me! Especially when the new ones are going to be massive you won’t have to shop anywhere else!
I know that we are lucky to have such good farmers markets and farm shops in the area and I’m incredibly lucky to have an allotment so I’m committed to making the most out of these. Also local food just tastes better. :)
